Everything You Need to Know About the AESUB Target Net

Everything You Need to Know About the AESUB Target Net

Placing reference markers for 3D scanning—especially on large objects—can be a time-consuming and tedious task. Setup and cleanup are a hassle. The AESUB Target Net offers a smart solution to this problem. This reusable 3D scanning accessory features 300 reference markers, eliminating the need to apply them one by one.

Perfect for large-scale 3D scanning projects, AESUB Target Net works especially well on objects like a car.

In this guide, we will cover the following topics:

What is AESUB Target Net?

The AESUB Target Net can be quickly unfolded and set up in less than 20 seconds. Instead of placing reference markers individually, the net provides a pre-arranged grid of markers. Simply drape or secure the net over the object or scanning area. It’s quick to use, easy to remove, and streamlines the entire 3D scanning workflow.

Examples of using the AESUB Target Net to overcome 3D scanning challenges, such as scanning symmetrical objects

The AESUB Target Net provides reliable external markers that help maintain tracking during 3D scanning—reducing interruptions and minimizing misalignments. It’s the perfect solution for scanning large components such as vehicles, industrial machinery, and more.

Benefits of Using AESUB Target Net

You can use the AESUB Target Net when you want a fast, repeatable, and accurate way to provide reference points for 3D scanning—particularly on large, simple, symmetrical, or textureless objects where tracking would otherwise be difficult.

Benefits

  • Saves time: No need to apply dozens of single markers manually.
  • Reusable & cost-effective: Unlike adhesive reference dots, the net can be used repeatedly.
  • High marker density: Provides consistent reference points for stable tracking and precise alignment.
  • Ideal for large or smooth objects: Especially helpful when scanning surfaces with little texture or geometry.
  • Portable setup: Easy to move and position in different environments.
  • Magnetic: Easily clings to magnetic surfaces

Step-by-Step Guide to Using AESUB Target Net

AESUB net how to use
Follow these four simple steps to use AESUB Target Net.
  1. Unfold the Net

Take it out of the bag. AESUB Target Net comes in a bag for easy storage and travel.

    Removing from bag

The corner markers help you locate the corners of the net, so it’s easy to spread it out.

  2. Evenly place the magnetic targets across the large object.

Carefully cast the net onto the object. Separate all the magnetic points.

    Adjust markers on the hood

Make sure the reference markers are positioned correctly and the net doesn’t touch the object.

    Net doesn't touch the surface

The AESUB Target Net should look like this across all surfaces when it is setup correctly. Due to the magnetic core of the holders, the dots stay in place during the scanning process. Once you capture all the data you need, you can quickly take down the net as fast as you set up!

  3. Scan as usual

Use your 3D scanner to scan your object normally the way you do.

  4. Post-process the scans

Removing the AESUB Target Net from 3D scans is straightforward. Most professional 3D scanning software includes editing tools that make it easy to remove reference markers.

Here is a video that demonstrates how easy it is to take out 3D scanning markers from scan data.

Technical Specifications at a Glance

AESUB Target Net is a grid-style reference marker system engineered for professionals who demand both speed and precision. Below are the key technical details that define its performance, compatibility, and usage across various 3D scanning environments.

Net Dimensions 1500 mm x 2500 mm
Number of Measurement Targets ~300
Target Spacing Uniform 100 mm intervals
Target Type and diameter 6mm retro-reflective reference points
Target Height ~10 mm above scanning surface
Target Mounting Magnetic bases for attachment to ferromagnetic surfaces
Material Flexible netting with embedded magnetic targets
Reusability Fully reusable for multiple scanning sessions, cost-effective
Applications Ideal for medium to large components, especially symmetrical or reflective surfaces
Transport & Setup Lightweight, foldable, and easy to deploy
Compatibility Designed for use with all AESUB 3D scanning sprays and AESUB Dice
spaced 100mm apart for each marker
Each marker is spaced 100 mm apart from one another.
Target net offset
Each 6mm retro-reflective reference point on the AESUB Target Net is magnetically backed, allowing it to easily attach to magnetic surfaces. The markers are positioned to hover approximately 10mm above the target surface, ensuring clear visibility and optimal scanning performance.
